Presses move tools toward each other in a straight line and perform various tasks along their travel path or in the end position. Their applications include forming, joining, separating, and cast shaping. They are categorized according to their intended use. Many presses need hydraulic drives to enable the generation of required forces or speeds.

Hydraulic cylinders are used to apply press forces, but also to perform additional steps as part of the same process.
